Other Structures Coverage

Another common question asked in regards to a homeowners insurance policy is: “What is covered under the Other Structures coverage?” This coverage is pretty simple to understand, it is any structure on the property other than, or not attached to, the main dwelling.

Here are some examples:

  • Detached Garage
  • Fence
  • Swimming Pool
  • Swing set
  • Gazebo
  • Pergola

How Much Other Structure Coverage Do I Need?

A typical homeowners insurance policy sets your other structure coverage at 10% of the dwelling coverage. For instance if your dwelling coverage (coverage A) is set at $250,000 then the default Other Structure Coverage is $25,000. This value can be adjusted so it is important to understand the value of your other structures to make sure you have adequate coverage.

Most of the examples listed above are pretty straight forward, but the garage can be a tricky one. A garage may appear to be detached, but if it has a breezeway or walkway that is attached to the main dwelling it could be covered under the Dwelling Coverage (Coverage A) on the homeowners policy. Individual insurance companies might define what is attached versus detached differently, therefore it is important to discuss this with your insurance agent to determine how your particular insurance company will cover a detached garage with a breezeway or walkway.
